Oriental Guide

Kay Cooper Dunn

Kay was born August 13, 1949 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and was raised on a small tobacco farm just outside of Nashville, North Carolina, a small county seat town located 45 miles east of Raleigh. His father, a Master Mason, York Rite member and Shriner, operated a small furniture and appliance business in the area.

Kay graduated from Northern Nash Senior High School and attended Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina where he received his BS in mathematics. After attending a year of graduate school at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, he returned to Newport News Shipyard (where he had served an internship during his college summer breaks) as a Quality Assurance Engineer in the Quality Inspection Department of the Nuclear Power Division.

After two years, Kay returned to Raleigh as an Assistant Quality Control Manager for a regional engineering firm designing and constructing off-shore power plant system components. He continued his career at Carolina Power and Light Company where he served as a start-up engineer for the Brunswick Nuclear Power station. In 1980, soon after the Three Mile Island accident, Kay joined Science Applications International in their Palo Alto, California headquarters in San Jose. (At the San Jose facility he met a spirited GE editor, Peggy, who has been his wife for 30 years.)

In 1984 Kay redirected his risk management skills to the investment arena and received an MBA with an emphasis in finance from Golden Gate University. He also received a Series 7 Security Exchange Commission license and became designated a Registered Investment Advisor with the SEC and a Commodity Registered Investment Advisor with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He consulted with several private companies and start-ups assisting with business planning and development.

Kay later spent 18 months as a financial analyst on the staff of a Wells Fargo Group Vice President in the Private Bank Group, Asset Division in the Real Estate Trust Department.

In 1992, PMI Mortgage Insurance Co. offered Kay a position in their Capital Markets department to evaluate pool and structured loan transactions risk to be insured by PMI.

In 1998 Kay joined The Bohan Group in San Francisco as an underwriting consultant to the investment banking community to evaluate loans that were included in mortgage backed securities and other loan purchases between financial institutions. He later became a Transaction Manager with The Bohan Group which required extensive travel throughout the United States.

In 2008 Kay rejoined PMI Mortgage Insurance Co. in the Home Preservation Initiative department. He was the pioneer in a pilot program to imbed PMI personnel in loan servicing departments to assist with home ownership initiatives and retention. After a successful completion of the pilot program in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kay returned to PMI's home office in Walnut Creek where he works with investors and servicers of PMI-insured loans on pre-foreclosure workouts.

Kay was raised in Crow Canyon Lodge 551 in 2003, has served on the Temple Board, and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees. He is serving as a Surveyor which entails learning all floor positions in preparation for additional responsibilities. He joined the Oakland Scottish Rite in 2004 and remains an active participant in Rite functions. He joined Aahmes Shrine in 2010 and enjoys attending many unit and club activities.

Kay enjoys hiking and cycling, college sports (especially basketball) and reading.
